Wake-Up Whitehall

The 2008-09 school year saw a new addition to student activities at Whitehall School.  A group of dedicated Whitehall teachers, assisted by Dan Bernstein from the district Technology Department, developed a plan to turn a long-held aspiration of a student-centered morning TV show into a reality.

Fourth grade students had the opportunity to apply and audition for a position at Whitehall’s newly created TV station. The entire school suggested names and a vote was held. The winning name was Wake-Up, Whitehall!

Students completed a “job application” indicating their preference to be a News Anchor, Meteorologist, Lunch Specialist, Editor, Power Point Operator, or Patriotic  Singer.

The participants have grown in their public speaking skills, poise in front of the camera, and editing skills behind the scenes. Some topics reported in the news portion of the show include activities going on in classrooms, awards earned by students from activities inside as well as outside Whitehall, jokes, and character education plans. Whitehall students also hear the daily weather report, menu choices for lunch, and join in singing a different patriotic song each day.  The TV crew’s job lasts for two weeks at the end of which the parents are invited to observe their children “in action.”

A special “thank you” goes out to Mr. Steve Anderson who designed and built the news desk. It brings a professional look to the set and helps our budding news anchors practice their craft!
