About the Wellness Committee
The Monroe Township Board of Education is committed to supporting the optimal development of every student. The District recognizes the important connection between student wellness and learning. Healthy eating habits and regular physical activity are essential to students' academic success, physical and mental development, and lifelong health and well-being.
Childhood and adolescent obesity remains a significant public health concern in the United States. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 21.1% of children and adolescents ages 2–19 had obesity based on national data collected from August 2021 through August 2023.
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 strengthens requirements for local school wellness policies. In accordance with these requirements, the District maintains a Wellness Policy that includes goals for nutrition promotion and education, physical activity, and other school-based activities that support student wellness.
The Monroe Township Board of Education believes schools play an important role in helping students develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime. To support this work, the District established a School Wellness Committee to review and help guide policies, practices, and initiatives related to health and wellness throughout our schools.
The School Wellness Committee addresses a variety of topics affecting student health and well-being, including nutrition, physical activity, food safety, management of health-related needs, and the development of healthy school environments.
The committee brings together representatives from across the school community to help identify and address issues affecting student wellness. Membership includes representatives from district schools, staff, students, families, and members of the community.
Working collaboratively, the School Wellness Committee helps lead, coordinate, and support district wellness initiatives. While the District-Level Wellness Committee provides guidance for districtwide goals, each school may implement wellness activities that reflect its unique school culture and the needs of its students.
This webpage serves as a resource for our school community and provides information about wellness, nutrition, district initiatives, and recommendations for supporting healthier school environments.
